Design House Stockholm looks for Scandinavian design in JapanDECEMBER 8, 2010 |
| Design House Stockholm is a publishing house for contemporary Scandinavian design which is constantly looking for new collaborative projects and ideas. Now we're searching Japan to find talented designers in a distinctly Scandinavian idiom.
Scandinavian design is now an established design language centered on simplicity and functionality. All over the world, designers find inspiration in this style, creating simple, functional products with painstaking choices of materials and details. The Scandinavian design classics of tomorrow may very well have their origins in parts of the world other than Scandinavia. In March 2011, Design House Stockholm is holding design days in Tokyo, during which designers are invited to private meetings with Anders Färdig (CEO) and Pia Karlsson (Director Product and Concept Development) to discuss products and ideas. Design House Stockholm recently visited Tokyo Design Week to tell about its future design days and to exhibit at Design Tide. Design Tide is a forum for young designers and their very newest products. Design Tide attracts journalists, stylists, designers and buyers as well as interested members of the general public – a total of several thousand visitors a day. During Design Week, Design House Stockholm also issued invitations to a soiree at the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo, at which more than one hundred guests with an interest in design came together. Sweden's ambassador, Stefan Noréen, wished all of the guests welcome and took part in the festivities. Anders Färdig talked about the company's business idea and about what it is like to act as a publishing house for Scandinavian design. A little sparkle was added to the evening with Swedish beer from brewing company Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri, plus accompaniments, flown-in specially for the guests that evening. Also present at the Embassy, of course, were representatives of Design House Stockholm's Japanese distributor, Nishikawa Sangyo Co Ltd. Since the collaborative venture began a year ago, they have expanded Design House Stockholm's presence on the Japanese market through an expansion into Japanese department stores and prestige boutiques. At Design House Stockholm the mailboxes have now started filling up with interesting ideas and product suggestions. We look forward to returning to Tokyo in March to meet the people behind the most interesting and groundbreaking of those ideas.
